Student Spotlight: Bianca

Meet our amazing Intern Bianca! She is a former junior life guard, super Beyoncé fan and avid hiker who is approaching the 11th grade at Animo Venice Charter H.S.
Bianca came through our partnership with the Green Dot Public Schools summer internship program. She has been a pleasure to work with this summer and has played a significant role in getting our office ready for the upcoming school year.
Once her high school years are complete, Bianca is looking forward to staying in California for college and embracing her passion for hair & makeup. We are excited to see what the future holds for Bianca and wish her nothing but the best in school and in her future endeavors.

Gratitude Quote of the Month

"I am grateful for JKL because it has given me additional family, inspiration, and made my dreams come true."

Field Trip to Box Union – Santa Monica

Our JKL program from Manual Arts High School in Los Angeles recently had the chance to experience an awesome workout at The Box Union in Santa Monica, CA.
The Box Union provides a well-structured interactive boxing to the beat workout class for all fitness levels! From the moment the first song came on to the last song our JKL students were filled with sweat, smiles and motivation.
Our Box Union instructor, Kyle, did a great job teaching the class with infectious energy and positivity. We would like to thank Co-Founder, President & CEO of Box Union, Felicia Alexander for hosting our JKL students!

World Calisthenics Organization (WCO) Collaboration

Brendan Cosso, Founder of the World Calisthenics Organization (WCO), recently visited our JKL summer program at Manual Arts High School in Los Angeles with two of his world-renowned coaches, Chris and Andrew. The focus of the WCO is to create strong, healthy human beings, which they do through their vast global network and Team of Elite Calisthenics Coaches who offer leadership skills and training. WCO’s mission is to raise awareness and build confidence in a way that is accessible to all people, regardless of culture, race or socioeconomic status.
Part of the reason our session with the WCO was so powerful is that each coach was very transparent in sharing their stories on how calisthenics saved their lives. The main thread throughout the day was to encourage our students to find their passion and invest the time to make their dreams a reality! Each exercise, from bear crawls and push-ups on balance boards to tackling a handstand, was thoroughly demonstrated and modified as needed for all fitness levels.
Our students were so excited and didn’t want the session to end! Brendan and his coaches are the true definition of “paying it forward” for our youth and motivating them to turn to calisthenics instead of embracing negative behavior. We look forward to bringing Brendan and his coaches out to all of our Los Angeles schools just livin programs this Fall!

Yoga Tip From Camila

Try and take a few minutes every day to just be with yourself and reflect. We all get busy, but just a few minutes each day of quiet time that is set aside just for you can have a big impact on how you think and feel. I like to do this in the morning, but any break during the day to get quiet is really beneficial, especially for lowering your stress levels!

Recipe of the Month – Mediterranean Chop Chop

Want a quick, hearty, satisfying, and healthy meal? We’ve got it for you. This Mediterranean salad is so fresh and so easy to make. Have it on its own, or have it on the side of a piece of chicken or fish.
Fun Fact: In 2012 the world’s largest salad was made in Romania and it weighed 41,998 pounds! (try eating that for lunch!) While salads in general are good for you, the ones with the prepared dressing can have more calories than a double cheeseburger or pizza. (crazy, huh?!) So, the best way to eat a salad is to make it yourself including the dressing – it doesn’t have to be anything fancy, you can just use extra-virgin olive oil, fresh lemon juice and sea salt. This dressing takes only a sec to make and goes with almost any salad – you can add it to some diced cucumbers, tomatoes and bell peppers. I call it a ‘Mediterranean Chop Chop’ – it is so yummy and oh so good for you! Olive oil provides healthy fats, lemon juice and bell peppers – tons of vitamin C, tomatoes – dietary fiber and vitamin A. Dig in!
Servings: 1
Ingredients:
2 medium cucumbers, diced
2 tomatoes, diced
½ yellow bell pepper, diced
1 teaspoon extra-virgin olive oil
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
Sea salt, to taste
Directions: Combine all ingredients, chill if desired, and serve.
